Christmas 2013 - Phase 1

This post is going to capture the early part of December (and some of November) for Christmas "prep." Since Nathan was born I have typically done a terrible job of getting everything ready for Christmas.  The tree goes up at the last second. Presents are bought a few days before we have to leave town. You get the idea.  So this year, with a new baby, I decided that we were going to get things done early.  See how that makes sense? (yeah, me neither)

In early November we decided we wanted to make Christmas plates for the grandparents again. We did this for Nathan's first Christmas, and I wanted something similar with Olivia's little tootsies. Let me tell you, the pottery painting experience is quite different when you ramp it up from one kid to two. Hence, there are only a few pictures to capture the event. You're lucky to get that much!

"Hey lady, that tickles!"

We got Nathan this little penguin to paint and keep him occupied while we worked on the plates. He put about 10 layers of paint on his little head and shoulders then got bored with it.

Nathan's turn!

Successful mistle-"toes" plates!
On the weekend before Thanksgiving Jimmy and Nathan went and bought a new tree to replace our "newlywed" tree that was getting a bit scraggly looking. They decided on a pre-lit tree that is taller and fuller than our former tree. Despite the additional ease of not having to actually wrap lights, the set up of the tree this year was done in phases.  Phase 1: assemble the tree (good job, Daddy!).  Phase 2: decorate lower front quarter of the tree with 20 ornaments (good job, Nathan!) with appropriate supervision (good job, Olivia!).  Of course Mr. Independent wanted to get the ornament out of the barrel, put the hook on it and hang it on the tree all by himself.  I must have heard, "I do it" ten thousand times.

Daddy skillfully putting together the tree while Nathan skillfully pops the bubble wrap.

Unpacking the ornaments.

Good job, Daddy!

"I do the hook.  I do it!"

Mommy with her patient pants on.

The best looking quarter of the Christmas tree ever!

Finishing touches.
After an appropriate two-week interval, we decided to finish decorating the tree. Nathan helped for a while, then lost interest and I was able to decorate the top part of the tree. Nathan of course put the star on the top with Daddy's help. I promise this was much safer than it looks.

A victory such as getting the Christmas tree up more than two and a half weeks before Christmas called for celebratory cupcakes. Oh, it was also my birthday - that might have had something to do with the cupcakes. Close call really.

Christmas cards this year were the usual staging of the kids in front of the tree. Since Olivia wasn't sitting up by herself yet, I put her in the bumbo for balance and tried to get Nathan to get in next to her for some loving brother-sister shots. The results were mixed...

Predictably, I got the cards made right away and even got them addressed in a reasonable amount of time. Then I only had 20 stamps.  So twenty cards got put in the mail and made it to their fortunate recipients before Christmas. It finally took my mom, in the guise of the Stamp Fairy, buying stamps and mailing them to me before the any more were delivered. [Author's note: The rest made it sometime around Valentine's Day....probably lost in the mail or something. Don't judge.]

Next installment...Christmas!

Thanksgiving Tour 2013

This year, like so many years, we spread ourselves thin during Thanksgiving trying to spend time with everyone. We don't always succeed, but we make the effort.  This year we went down on Wednesday morning to have lunch with Jimmy's mom, grandma and grandpa. Then we spent Thursday in Bishop with my mom's side of the family, came back to Houston on Friday and then had lunch with my dad's side of the family on Saturday.  Oh, and Friday night Kelley's crew came up and spent the night at our house and Saturday night we had Cantrell, Kimberley and her boys (big and small). Just typing all of that makes me tired. Here are some pictures from along the way, although it appears I have no pictures from Wednesday (probably because I was traumatized from the 4 hour drive south).

The life of a college student is hard (Thanksgiving Day).

Being 10 is basically just as hard. (My nephew Allen)

Uncle Roy showing 'em how it's done.

Grandma Sheila, Mom and Kelley chatting after lunch on Thanksgiving Day.

Grammy and her snuggle bug on the back porch of Grandma Sheila's house in Bishop.

Playing in the backyard at Grandma Sheila's house. Such a cutie!

I have a video that accompanies this picture.  Nathan was laying on his tummy and would roll a ball (possibly a cat toy) down the hall.  Jimmy was holding his ankles and would push/slide him along the floor to get the balls. Rinse and repeat about 50 times. Nathan was laughing the entire time.

This picture was taken while we were at Lori's house to prove that Olivia is Ashley's mini-me. Ashley clearly had more hair, but wow - those cheeks!

Very serious discussion between Popo and Nathan on Friday morning before we headed back to Katy.

Nathan and cousin Tyley watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse together Friday night.

Uncle Chris reading a Nugget book to Nathan and Tyley Saturday morning before we all headed to Skipper and Dayle's house for Thanksgiving lunch with the Bryan side of the family.

Grammy found her snuggle bug again at Skipper's house! That seems to happen pretty frequently.

Grandma Bryan (aka Memaw and Gigi)

Again?!

Mommy and Daddy - looking surprisingly rested given the amount of traveling and company happening the days leading up to Saturday.

Livy-bug coming to say "Hi" to the Daddy (notice who is holding her still...)

A picture of the spread. Also captured (from right to left): Kimberley in mid-bend, Skipper at the sink, Grandma grazing and half of Cynthia. I am clearly not going to quit my day job for a career as a photographer any time soon.

Nathan and cousin Chance watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the iPad while the big boys watch football on the TV. Oh, the wonders of technology!

Is There a Doctor (of Philosophy) in the House?!?

::angels sing the hallelujah chorus::

On November 22, 2013 my favorite physicist officially became Dr. Jimmy Trevino (or, as he prefers it, Jimmy Trevino, PhD).  The title of his dissertation was, "Detecting Communities in Complex Unipartite and Bipartite Networks by Maximizing the Modularity" and his advising professor was Dr. Kevin E. Bassler at the University of Houston. There is a little known rule in science-land that the titles of important papers must not be less than 10 words long. I'd say he succeeded. They are also allowed to make up words and use them as if they are real words that everybody knows.  For example, "betweenness." Seriously, who says that???

I, of course, was super excited and happy all day while he spent the day being nervous. I was able to take the day off from work so I could be there for his defense and post-defense celebration on campus. Speaking of the celebration, the tradition is that the candidate bring food and drink for their research group (and anyone else who happens to follow their nose to the room with the food).  While this seems a bit backward to me, we went along with it anyway.

We did not attend the graduation because the timing was awful with two small children, UH campus congestion, Houston traffic and impending travel to South Texas for Christmas. I wish we could have made it, but the pain and suffering required were not worth it at the end of the day. Instead we got a cute picture of Nathan in Jimmy's paraphernalia.

I wanted to include this achievement in our little book of memories for several reasons.  First, because I am extremely proud of my wonderful husband for finally achieving his goal despite a few setbacks and kids along the way. Second, to encourage our children to not give up on pursuing dreams of higher education. It only took 14 years of post-secondary education to get here (August 1999 to November 2013).  Fourteen loooong years, especially since I started funding this education in 2007 when we got married. I joke that he only married me as his sugar-mama so he could stay in school forever, although I eventually made the rule that he and our kids could not do homework at the kitchen table together. Despite the stress on our finances, having him in school while having our children was a blessing because it gave us an added dimension of flexibility that we badly needed. Because he is a theoretical physicist he was able to work from home some days and never had to stay on campus in a lab until all hours of the night.  He subscribed to the Richard Feynman problem solving algorithm (supposedly coined in jest by another Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Murray Gell-Mann):
1. Write down the problem.
2. Think very hard.
3. Write down the answer.

Okay, okay, he doesn't do it quite like that, but he is very smart and it was nice that he could think from anywhere. In the end all the sacrifice was worth it of course and he now has a great job as a computational physicist for a start-up in Tomball that he says is just like school except he's getting paid (hooray!). One evening I asked how his day went at work and he said, "It was good. I drank coffee and did math all day." I guess for a physicist it can't get much better than that!

Olivia Marie - 4 Months Old

My sweet lady bug turned four months old on November 11th. Thankfully, since it is now May 2014, I've been taking some notes along the way of little and big milestones to remember. [Author's Note: Most of this post was written back in November, so I've kept it in the present tense for the most part.]

The numbers: 13.75 lbs (41st %ile), 24.6 in (58th %ile) and head circumference of 15.6 in (20th %ile)
Size 2 Diapers and Size 3 months or 3-6 month clothes

People keep telling me how big she looks, but really she's pretty average. They are probably thrown off by those pinch-able cheeks she has (thank you, Daddy) and thigh rolls (you're welcome, angel). She had her last taste of breastmilk about a week prior to her 4 month birthday. My pump broke the second Friday I was back to work, so I had to start weaning her earlier than planned. This is almost a whole month earlier than I weaned Nathan, so if she makes a B in calculus we'll know why. Now she is taking three 4 oz bottles 8 times a day. Oh, how I hate washing bottles!  Here are a few more milestones and memories:
  • First day of "school" was October 14th at the same daycare as Nathan.  I cried a little (of course) but it was not nearly as hard as when I left Nathan. Mrs. Melby is so wonderful and I know Livy's being taken care of and having her little brain stimulated. Similar to my first maternity leave, I left her for just half a day the first day and worked from home. I left her a little more each day until I went downtown on a Thursday. I thought I was ready to go back to work, and so went back 3 weeks earlier than I had to (if I exhausted all my vacation). Notice I said I thought I was ready.  Not so much (let me see your shocked face). As a result, I wasn't very chipper or overly productive for a while. I usually spent half my time looking at my to-do list feeling overwhelmed and the other half thinking about my kids (I don't record my daydreaming or spinning wheels time...which is why my time sheet looks sad. But don't fret, I'll make up for it during busy season...which reminds me I need a new box of Kleenex for my office). I know it gets easier as they get older, but guess what...they aren't older yet, so it's really really hard.
  • Found her feet 11/10. There are not many things cuter than a baby playing with her feet!
  • She is almost rolling over but not quite.
  • Talking/babbling more but is very stingy with her laughs (first laugh on 11/15). She is tracking, smiling, and interacting on schedule.
  • Loves her activity mat and is grabbing and mouthing everything she can get her hands on. Chews her giraffe a lot and her hands.
  • She doesn't like the pacifier unless she's really sleepy and upset. Even then she's not always going to take it (rotten child).
  • She enjoys "reading" books and looking at brother.  When reading she really tries to interact more with the book than listen to the words, but hey, reading is reading, right?!
  • Waking up once a night (I think...It's all a little blurry) to eat then wakes up for the day usually by 6:00 am
  • Still loves her 'happy daddy place' and Daddy can get her to calm down and go to sleep the fastest if it isn't time for her to eat.
  • Her hair is still pretty dark and oh. my. goodness! The 'peacock fan' in the back - that no amount of smoothing or brushing will fix - is just adorable.  I'm sure someday it will lay down....but it hasn't so far!

I am often asked how Nathan is adjusting to the new baby. Now that he is used to having her in the house he is generally very affectionate. He loves holding her feet and saying, "teeny tiny toes" and still calls her "Aaahleeeeeevia."

My sweet angel, I hope you know Mommy always loves you, no matter what.

Oh yes - Quality in Everything We Do!

Full tummy, happy baby

In the happy daddy place...

Tasting her giraffe and rocking the peacock fan!

Sweet, sleeping angel

Picture day at school! Too bad this picture was better than the one taken by the professional photographer.

This is how she comes home from picture day at school.  I like how they left the pink headband on her so she looks like she's about to star in an 80's jazzercise video!

Helping mommy catch up on CPE.

More pictures from the 4 Month photo shoot: "Why do I have to wear this outfit?"

"You guys are hilarious!"

"Mmmmmm, bunny."

Nathan's reaction to the 4 Month photo shoot in progress.

Just because. As you can see, we are still into Wheel of Fortune before bedtime.
